How to safely withdraw money from an ATM?

ATM transactions may be associated with the theft of money after cashing out and the theft of card data through an ATM with subsequent withdrawal of funds. Pickup rules. Simple tips on how to safely use an ATM.

Risk of robbery

Theft of freshly cashed funds is more of a threat to those who withdraw large amounts from an ATM. In order not to become a victim of intruders, to withdraw “big money”, try to choose ATMs inside bank branches. At the same time, avoid ATM areas where there are a lot of people crowding - there may be gunners among them.

Cover the ATM keypad with your hand when entering the PIN code. After the terminal issues the money, put it in your wallet, bag or pocket as soon as possible.

“Be careful if you are on the street with a large amount of money, criminals may try to accompany you. Try to move along busy streets, if possible, use public, private transport or taxis,” recommends Victor MAYDANYUK, Director General of the Institute of Stock Market and Management (IFRU).

A thief in an ATM

The second danger may lie in wait for plastic card users in the ATM itself. These can be various kinds of technical devices that allow fraudsters to copy information from your card. For example, attackers install special overlays on the card reader, with the help of which the information recorded on the magnetic tape of a credit card is copied. Sometimes overlays are installed on the ATM keyboard - they are needed to fix the entered pin code. Also, micro cameras can be attached to the ATM, recording the process of entering a pin code.

Using the above devices, criminals can duplicate your card and safely empty your account using a pin code, Maydaniuk says.

To avoid these unfortunate consequences, try not to use ATMs located on the street, in shopping centers or at train stations. It is best to withdraw money from terminals located inside bank branches. “As a rule, they are monitored quite closely by the security services of banks using video surveillance systems. Here, scammers prefer not to take risks and do not install their “equipment”. On the street, it is better to choose ATMs in well-visible places that are actively used by customers. It is also advisable to choose ATMs of networks that are well known to you, with a pronounced branded “appearance”, ”the expert emphasizes.

Before inserting a card into an ATM, inspect it carefully, first of all, the card reader. Devices installed by scammers are usually not very well fixed, often ordinary glue is used for this, traces of which are easy to notice. The overlay on the keyboard makes it unusually convex. If you have the slightest suspicion about the ATM, refuse to make a transaction in it, move away and call the bank. For security purposes, it is best to do this from a distance, since criminals are usually located within line of sight of the ATM.

If your suspicions arose after you inserted the card into the ATM, it is recommended to report them to the bank by phone and block the card until the situation is clarified.

“You should also be alerted if, for some reason, the ATM does not see the card you inserted or does not want to return it. In this case, you should also report the incident to the bank's support service and block the card, ”advises Maydanyuk.

We are talking about the so-called. "Lebanese loop" (or "trapping") - scammers install a special film envelope in the card reader that captures the card, and as soon as the client leaves, they remove it.

In some cases, attackers can come to the rescue by trying to pull out the card and advising them to perform a few “tested on their own experience” actions. At some point, you will be prompted to dial a pin code, and after all attempts are in vain, they will recommend that you urgently go to the bank to write an application. By the time you get to the bank, the scammers have already managed to withdraw everything they can from your card through the same ATM. Never reveal your PIN to anyone, and once you've lost control of your card, be sure to block it.

“And lastly, be sure to use the SMS-informing service about all movements on the card account. In case of any message about a transaction that you did not make, immediately inform the bank about it. In many cases, this will allow you not to lose money, ”the expert instructs.
